Love sneakers and want to learn about their anatomy (parts)? Then DIG DEEPER
Counter: A piece of material used for giving protection to the heel and rear components of a sneaker to keep it in perfect condition.
Collar - the opening of a sneaker that is padded for better comfort and fit.
Pull tab - reinforced pie of synthetic attached into the rear end of a sneaker in a loop structure. Rear-end of the shoe can be easily pulled to fit the ankle. Athletic shoes have heel tab for performing the same function with ease.
Heel frame - the back part of the heel for reinforcement, better fitting, and movement.
2. Vamp - the front portion of a sneaker
Tongue - it is a material strip attached to the internal lace system of a sneaker. Placed within the lacing system, it comes in contact with the upper part of the feet and contributes towards a sung fit. Some sneaker brands opt for a padded tongue for better fitting, comfort, and feet placement.
Eyelet - the holes through which laces are threaded through are known as Eyelets. Some sneakers have added pieces of material like leather known as eye stay which houses the eyelets.
Lace cage - houses the shoelace system. Provided mobility and snug fit, can be fixed i.e. completely stitched or partially attached called floating for better feel and movement. It delivers flexibility according to movement.
Toe Box - the front part of a sneaker within which the feet is placed snugly. The toe box of a sneaker is created in such a way that it contributes towards a perfect fit for the toes and adjusts itself according to the width of a foot.
Toe Cap - An essential component in sport or athletic shoe placed in the front. Made up of rubber, the toe cap is placed in front of a toe box providing protection to the shoe as well as the feet.
Mudguard - As visible from the name, mudguard is a piece of material protecting the upper from dirt and dust. It is stitched to the front portion of the upper around the toe box.
3. Other essential components:
Lining - the internal lining of a sneaker made up of laminated fabrics or other materials. The lining provides durability to the sneaker and helps in retaining moisture. The strength of the internal lining material and its wale structure gives robustness to the sneaker. These are stitched to the internal structure of the upper for solidity and keeps the sneaker fit for use for the long term. The tongue is generally padded or cushioned with the same lining material.
Modern athletic shoes have done away with internal lining for better and comfortable fitting. This has reduced the overall cost for manufacturing thereby making them less expensive for sneakerheads.
Overlays - reinforcements stitched to the upper.
